Whether you are running a building site, a wedding on a farm or a weekend market, portable toilet hire keeps guests and workers comfortable and keeps you on the right side of the rules. Hire companies deliver the units, service them and collect them afterwards. Tell us the dates, the number of people and the address, and companies near you will send quotes directly. Compare unit types, servicing and delivery, not just the daily rate, because the cheapest quote can leave you short of toilets on the day.

Flushing, chemical and VIP units

There are three common types, and the price follows the comfort:

  • Chemical units: a simple cabin with a holding tank and blue disinfectant. Cheapest and most common on building sites.
  • Flushing units: a foot pump flushes water into a tank. Cleaner and better for events.
  • VIP units: trailers or large cabins with basins, mirrors, lights and sometimes running water, for weddings and corporate days.

For long hires, ask whether the cabin has a lockable door, a roof vent and a urinal, as these small things matter to workers and guests.

How many units do you need

A common rule for construction is one toilet for every 20 workers, with a separate unit for women where possible. For events, plan about one unit per 50 guests for a short function and one per 30 guests for a long day with drinking. Add at least one wheelchair-accessible unit, and more units if the event runs late. Too few units create queues and complaints, so err on the generous side. Place them where they are easy to find, lit after dark and away from where food is served.

Servicing and hire periods

On a building site, units are usually emptied and restocked once a week, or twice for busy crews. At events, ask for a service during the day and an attendant at larger functions. Hire is charged by the day for events and by the week or month for construction. Delivery, collection and servicing often cost extra, and the company will need level ground and truck access. On soft or sloping ground, a firm platform or gravel pad stops units tipping. For longer projects, ask about a holding tank connection.

Planning and compliance

Site rules vary, but large events usually need adequate sanitation as part of safety approval, and construction sites must provide toilets for workers. Ask suppliers about hand-wash stations, toilet paper, waste disposal slips and how they dump waste. See honey sucker services if you also need tanks emptied on the same site. Keep your delivery notes and service records, because inspectors and clients may ask for proof of sanitation arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

How much does portable toilet hire cost?
A basic chemical unit costs roughly R150 to R350 per day, R600 to R1,500 per week or R1,200 to R2,800 per month. Flushing units cost more, and VIP units can reach R2,500 to R6,000 per event. Remote sites add a delivery charge per kilometre.
Does the price include servicing?
Sometimes. Some quotes cover weekly emptying, while others charge each visit. Confirm what is included, plus delivery, collection, cleaning and toilet paper, and ask what happens if a unit is vandalised or needs an extra service.
Can I hire a toilet for a farm wedding?
Yes, and it is common. Choose flushing or VIP units for guests, and give clear directions, since companies need to get a truck to the venue. Book early for peak wedding months, which run from spring to early autumn.
Who cleans up after the event?
The hire company empties and removes the units, but you should arrange cleaning of the surroundings. Report any damage so you are not charged unfairly. Take photos of the units when they arrive and when they leave.
