Prices vary widely because tanks differ in size, material and delivery distance. Septic tank prices in South Africa can start at a few thousand rand for a small plastic tank and climb past R100,000 for a fully installed system on a difficult site. Tell us what you need, and suppliers and contractors in your area will quote directly so you can compare like with like.

What a tank costs by size

These are rough 2026 guides for a new tank only, before delivery, fittings and installation:

  • 1,000 L: about R4,500 to R7,000
  • 2,500 L: about R8,000 to R12,000
  • 5,000 L: about R15,000 to R22,000
  • 6,500 L: about R20,000 to R28,000
  • 10,000 L: about R30,000 to R42,000

Concrete and fibreglass units can be dearer or cheaper than plastic depending on the region. Always compare the litre capacity, not just the label size. Delivery to a town is cheaper than delivery to a remote farm, and VAT is sometimes left off advertised prices, so confirm whether a figure includes it.

The cost of a complete installed system

Once you add excavation, bedding sand, pipework, a vent, a drainage field and labour, a small house system typically lands between R25,000 and R70,000. A larger system for a lodge or farm with a big field, an extra tank or a treatment plant can run from R90,000 to R250,000 or more. Municipal plans and percolation tests add to the budget. See septic tank installation for what the job involves.

Cashbuild, Build It and other retailers

Hardware and building chains such as Cashbuild and Build It generally stock a limited range of plastic tanks, fittings, pipes, sand and cement, and many will order in larger sizes on request. Stock and prices vary by branch and change often, so phone before you drive. Specialist tank suppliers carry more sizes and often offer delivery and installation, which can offset a slightly higher sticker price. Use a retailer to price the parts and a supplier to price the full job. Remember that sand, gravel, cement, pipe and fittings add up quickly, so a cheap tank with an expensive list of extras may cost more than a dearer tank sold as a complete kit.

What drives the price up or down

The main factors are tank size and material, the distance from the supplier, truck access, rock or a high water table, the length of the pipe run and the size of the drainage field. Time of year also matters: building peaks in the dry months, when contractors are busiest and quotes are often higher. Fuel costs also move plastic and cement prices from year to year. What to include in your request

  • Tank size in litres and the material you prefer
  • Delivery address and truck access to the site
  • Whether you want the tank only or a full installed system
  • Whether a drainage field, vent and fittings are included
  • Your timeline and whether plans are approved

Septic Tank Prices for different properties

  • Houses: pricing a 2,500 to 5,000 L tank and a basic installed system for a house
  • Smallholdings and plots: pricing a bigger tank, a longer pipe run and a larger drainage field
  • Estates and complexes: bulk pricing for several tanks, with a discount for matching sizes
  • Farms and game farms: pricing separate systems for the homestead and worker housing in one quote
  • Lodges, guesthouses and venues: pricing 7,000 L and larger tanks or a treatment plant for guest numbers
  • Restaurants, shops and offices: pricing heavy duty tanks and installation for shops and restaurants
  • Schools, churches and clinics: pricing large tanks and compliance work for schools and clinics
  • Factories, mines, sites and events: pricing bulk tanks for sites and camps, with delivery to a set date

Frequently asked questions

How much is a 2,500 litre septic tank?
A new 2,500 L plastic septic tank usually costs roughly R8,000 to R12,000 before delivery and fitting. Concrete options may be similar or higher once transport is included. Ask for the delivered price and what the kit includes.
Are septic tank prices at Cashbuild and Build It the cheapest?
Not always. Retail chains can be competitive for common sizes and fittings, but stock varies by branch. A specialist supplier may offer a better delivered price or a larger range. Get at least two quotes for the same size.
Why is a 5,000 litre tank so much more than a 2,500 litre one?
Price rises faster than volume because larger tanks use more material, need stronger walls and cost more to move. A bigger tank also needs a larger hole and sometimes a crane. The extra spend usually pays back through fewer pump-outs.
Does the quote usually include installation?
Often not. Many tank quotes cover the tank only. Ask whether delivery, fittings, bedding, labour and the drainage field are included, and compare the total figure, not just the tank line.
