JoJo is the name many South Africans use for a ribbed polyethylene tank, and a JoJo septic tank is popular for good reasons: it is light, watertight and quick to install. The brand makes several sizes, and other makers sell similar moulded tanks. Tell us your size and site, and suppliers who deliver to your area will quote directly, with or without installation.

Sizes and what they suit

Moulded polyethylene septic tanks are commonly sold in these sizes:

  • 1,000 to 2,000 L: a cottage, a small granny flat or a single toilet block.
  • 2,500 to 3,500 L: a house with one to three bedrooms.
  • 5,000 to 6,000 L: a family house of three to five bedrooms, the most common choice.
  • 8,000 to 10,000 L: large homes, guest rooms and small lodges, or two tanks in series.

A 6,000 L tank is a sensible upgrade for a growing household. Check septic tank design if you are unsure which size matches your bedrooms.

Price list ranges

Prices vary by region and supplier, so treat these as rough 2026 guides for a tank only: about R8,000 to R12,000 for 2,500 L, R15,000 to R22,000 for 5,000 L, R20,000 to R28,000 for 6,000 L and R30,000 to R42,000 for 10,000 L. Delivery, tees, vent fittings and lids may cost extra. Ask for a current price list or a quote for your exact size. Smaller 1,000 L and 2,000 L tanks cost less but are quickly outgrown, and a pair of 5,000 L tanks in series may cost about the same as one 10,000 L tank while being easier to carry in. See septic tank prices for how the rest of the system adds up.

Installation tips for a plastic tank

A ribbed plastic tank is strong when supported evenly, but it can crack, float or deform if bedded badly. Follow these basics:

  • Dig a level hole with a compacted sand base, free of stones and sharp rock.
  • Fill the tank with water while you backfill so the walls do not buckle.
  • Backfill in layers of sand, compacting each layer by hand.
  • Keep the tank away from heavy traffic unless it is rated for it, and anchor it if the water table is high.
  • Fit the inlet and outlet tees before backfilling, and leave the lid at ground level for pump-outs.
  • Do not park a vehicle on the tank unless the maker says it is rated for the load.

The full job is described in septic tank installation.

Alternatives to consider

JoJo-style plastic is not the only choice. Concrete tanks suit heavy ground and driveways, and treatment plants suit tight or sensitive sites. Compare options in plastic septic tanks and read the buyer guide on septic tanks for sale.

What to include in your request

  • Tank size in litres and the number of bedrooms served
  • Delivery address and truck access to the site
  • Whether tees, lids and a vent fitting must be included

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of a 6,000 litre JoJo septic tank?
A 6,000 L polyethylene septic tank typically costs roughly R20,000 to R28,000 before delivery and fitting. Prices change by region and supplier, so request a current delivered quote for your area.
Can I get a JoJo septic tank installed for me?
Yes. Many suppliers deliver, and drainage contractors in your area can install the tank, pipes and drainage field. Ask for the tank and labour on separate lines so you can compare.
Are plastic septic tanks as durable as concrete?
A well installed polyethylene tank can last 20 to 30 years or more. It does not rust or crack from ground movement like concrete can, but it needs careful bedding and a full fill with water during backfilling.
Can a ribbed tank be used as a conservancy tank?
The same moulded shape is used for sealed tanks, but a septic tank has an outlet and a drainage field while a conservancy tank does not. See conservancy tanks before you buy for the wrong purpose.
