Septic tanks and drainage in Mthatha
Mthatha is the main town of the former Transkei, and large parts of its area are not on a reliable sewer. Homes in Southernwood, Fort Gale and Norwood are served by the municipal system, while hillside homes, newer developments, Ngangelizwe's edges and rural settlements toward Libode, Qunu and Mqanduli use septic tanks, pit toilets and conservancy tanks. The soil is clay on steep hillsides, and summer rains are heavy, so drainage fields can slip or overflow. Honey sucker operators are fewer here, and many travel in from the larger Eastern Cape centres. Always ask where the load will be dumped, as works capacity is limited.
Typical portable toilet hire requests in the area come from:
- Houses: a unit or two for a renovation or a garden party at an off-sewer house
- Smallholdings and plots: extra toilets for a wedding, market day or build on a smallholding
- Schools, churches and clinics: temporary toilets for a school sports day or church conference
- Restaurants, shops and offices: units for a shop fit-out, pop-up market or outdoor trade show
- Farms and game farms: chemical units in the lands for seasonal workers, or VIP units for a farm wedding
- Lodges, guesthouses and venues: VIP units for weddings and conferences that exceed the lodge's own toilets
- Estates and complexes: units for contractors working inside the estate during building or repairs
Local tips for Mthatha
Most work in Mthatha is done by teams based in a few operators in Mthatha, with others travelling in from East London, and the usual setup is septic tanks and conservancy tanks where the sewer does not reach. When you ask for quotes, ask where the operator will dump, since municipal works capacity is limited.
Portable Toilet Hire usually means delivered cabins, serviced and collected, for chemical, flushing and VIP units, emptied weekly, or daily at events. Ground in the area: steep clay hillsides and heavy summer rain: drainage fields can slip.
What to include in your request
- Event or project dates and hire length
- Number of guests or workers
- Type of unit: chemical, flushing or VIP
